Waitaha Hydro Project Approved, Boosting Renewable Energy for the West Coast
Westpower, alongside partners Poutini Ngāi Tahu, welcome the final approval of the Waitaha Hydro Project, a major step forward for renewable energy.
The project will strengthen electricity resilience on the West Coast and help meet New Zealand’s growing demand for clean energy.
Westpower General Manager Generation and Technology Rodger Griffiths, said the decision reflects years of work and strong collaboration.
“This is a great outcome for the West Coast and for New Zealand’s energy future. We’re proud to be delivering a project that supports regional resilience and renewable generation.”
“We are confident the project strikes the right balance, with a small footprint and comprehensive conditions in place to protect the environment. We remain committed to delivering it responsibly, including supporting environmental outcomes and recreational users of the Waitaha.”
The scheme is expected to generate 120–140 GWh of renewable electricity each year — enough to power around 12,000 homes.
